FoodSaver FreshSaver Handheld

by admin on July 8, 2012

The FoodSaver FreshSaver Handheld Vacuum Sealing System is FoodSaver’s entry level vacuum sealer. It is small, compact, portable and inexpensive. It runs on a rechargeable battery, so you should be able to bring it with you wherever you go.

The unit is simple to use and simple to clean up. The sealing nozzle can be removed and tossed into the dishwasher. The sealer itself would just need to be wiped down as needed. Vacuum sealing your food has never been easier, which is why it has gained a bit of a following.

The FreshSaver must be used with its own special 1 quart and 1 gallon bags or with the reusable deli container accessory.  You can not use other FoodSaver accessories.

Who Should Buy the FreshSaver?

Someone who wants to experiment with vacuum sealing but as inexpensively as possible.  It doesn’t seal as well as its bigger brothers and you cant use most of the FoodSaver accessories but if your primary purpose is to extend the life of foods that you normally keep in the refrigerator and eat within a week or so, (deli meats, cheese, vegetables etc..) this is a fine entry level vacuum sealer.

Someone who needs portability.  This is a very small handheld device that easily fits in a drawer and once charged would be convenient to carry to where you need it.

Who Shouldn’t Buy the FreshSaver?

Anyone expecting to do heavy duty, long term, strong seal, vacuum sealing.  Also if you want to use the wide selection of available accessories like sealing rolls, mason jar sealers, wine bottle stoppers etc…  The Freshsaver does have its own 1 quart and 1 gallon sealer bags and one reusable storage container.  You can see these below.

There is really just one FreshSaver but it comes bundled in a few different ways.  The most basic and least expensive is the FSFRSH0051. It is white and does n0t not come with a charging stand or additional storage bags.  Note you dont need the charging stand and can just plug the small power cord directly into the wall.  Other versions like the FSFRSH0055 include this stand and come in different colors.  They cost roughly $7 more.

Lets take a look at what purchasers on Amazon are saying about it.

Amazon Customer Reviews

The FreshSaver received a total of 49 reviews at the time of this writing.  30 (62%) 5 Star Reviews, 5 (10%) 4 Star reviews, 2 (4%) 3 star reviews,  3 (6%) 2 Star reviews, 9 (18%) 1 star reviews.

Negative Reviews

The main problem that is associated with this product is that around 20% of reviews were unhappy with the vacuum seal they could (or could not obtain) with the unit’s special sealer bags.  How much of this is due to unrealistic expectations, improper use or faulty bags is hard to say.  A number of reviewers note that there is a bit of a learning curve to get the feel for how to seal the bags.  To put it in perspective 80% of the reviews don’t mention having the problem.

Another problem that people have run into is that they didn’t realize it isnt compatible with the other storage accessories sold by FoodSaver. Many people have used other products from FoodSaver, so they become disappointed when they cannot continue to use the same bags and storage containers.

Positive Reviews

One of the best selling points of this product is its low price. Since you can get a FreshSaver for less than $20, it makes it a rather attractive option when you are choosing a first vacuum sealer for your kitchen. Although the bags are a bit more expensive, it’s nice to be able to get started at a low price.

Although some people may think that a smaller device will lead to a product that does not deliver when it comes to keeping food fresh, many customers have found that this machine provided most of the benefits they were looking for in vacuum sealer. A few people even go as far to say that this smaller machine is about to work just as well as some of the larger vacuum sealers on the market. This is definitely an exaggeration in my humble opinion.  I thought it was interesting to note that a number of people bought the FreshSaver even though they already have a counter-top sealer.

This is one product that I recommend you actually read the customer reviews for. It wont take long and together they give a very balanced and complete appraisal of the product if you are unsure about purchasing it. Click here for FreshSaver reviews.

Also on the product page is a good FoodSaver video showing the FreshSaver in use.  Just click on the image to the left and when the product page loads look for the little video icon underneath whatever photo is being shown and click on it. You can see the video icon at the bottom of the image to the left of this paragraph.

As I say at the top of the review I consider the FreshSaver an entry level or special purpose product.  By all means buy it if you want to get your feet wet and judge for yourself how useful vacuum sealing can be day to day in your kitchen.  At under $30 for the unit and a box of sealer bags it is not a big investment. Also buy it if you need the portability. If you think you are ready to make a bigger commitment to vacuum sealing I would recommend you purchase a counter-top model and accessory hose.  This will give you stronger, more reliable seals, and the ability to use all the FoodSaver accessories, especially my favorite; the wide lid mason jar sealer.
